Water: A Key Ingredient

As for the basic healthful eating guidelines, how about this for simplicity: The star headliner on our list for a skin-healthy diet is colorless, odorless, and basically tasteless. It requires no chewing, cooking, or preparation. It has no calories, in its natural state contains none of the fancy-sounding nutrients whose praises I sing in this chapter, and at times it even goes unnoticed on your meal table. This is a shame, because the more you notice it, consume it throughout the day, and go back for seconds, thirds, fourths, and more, the healthier you will be and your skin will look. I am talking, of course, about water. And no discussion of good nutrition should start without it.

Although water makes up about 70 percent of our bodies, the older we get, the less we feel thirsty—and thus, unless we pay focused attention to doing so, the less we drink. It’s ironic that water is one of the most vital nutrients in out diets, yet is one of the most neglected. I have heard water referred to as “the forgotten nutrient.” Here are just several of many reasons for going out of your way to enjoy one of nature’s greatest health and beauty products:

Water naturally rejuvenates your skin. Drinking water prevents dehydration throughout your body. Drinking lots of water—at least eight eight-ounce glasses per day, plus one eight-ounce glass per each hour of light activity—keeps your skin well hydrated, a good step toward helping it stay supple and smooth. Well-hydrated skin may also sag less after weight loss.

Here’s an important point to be made about getting enough water daily: Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and cola contain caffeine, which acts as a diuretic, causing you to eliminate water via urination. If you drink these, do so in addition to your eight glasses of water per day. If you drink them in significant quantities, drink even more water to counteract their diuretic effects. Although drinking plenty of water is important, if you wish to prevent morning puffiness, taper off your intake of water and other fluids two to three hours before bedtime.

As an automobile needs gasoline, and a machine needs oil for its parts, your body needs water in order to perform its countless functions, including digestion, circulation, maintaining muscle tone, and regulating body temperature.

Water flushes waste products from your system. In case you’ve ever wondered where “cottage cheese” thighs come from, the answer is: waste products in your system.

Water helps burn fat, naturally suppresses appetite, and—para-doxically—gets rid of the excess water that makes you feel heavy. Interestingly, the less water you drink, the more water you retain!
